Ar

Her voice was recognizable, even in a crowd full of people. I had just come from the bathroom when I heard her. Last time I saw her, she was kicking me out of her hospital room. All I wanted to do was care for the girl and give her the proper treatment a woman should receive.

It was clear she was dealing with a man that had no respect for her. He put hands on her as if she was a being that stole from him.

Helen told me everything Chanel had told her. Knowing how she was tossed around made me want to be there for her and take over whatever problems she had.

What had me up in turmoil was not knowing where she came from. I didn’t invite her, and she wasn’t friends with either of my siblings, yet she was standing in my childhood home, swapping smiles with my family.

I interrupted their conversation when I stepped onto the patio. It wasn’t intentional, but it happened. All eyes were placed on me like they were waiting for my response. I had none. She was there for them, not me.

I walked past both her and her friend to the grill. Leave it to Helen to not accept my actions and call me out.

“AR, we have guests. Speak to them.”

“They’re yours, not mine. I’m good.”

“Don’t worry about it, Helen. He’s just in his feelings like all men usually are. You know, when you turn him down and he can’t seem to let it go. I just have one question though. Are you a Shaun, or am I good?”

Chanel was being an asshole, and I wasn’t about to lie; it was getting to me. She put me in a category with a person who was more so jealous and envious of the life she had.

I came up with that conclusion when Augie gave me the rundown. Her ex took everything she worked for away in the blink of an eye. I was anything but that sorry ass nigga.

“Oh, trust me when I say that you’re good. I don’t chase women, and I damn sure don’t kiss ass. Even if I did, yours not big enough, beautiful,” I threw back.

That last statement was to get back at her for trying me like I was some weak man she could talk to any kind of way. She had respect, and she was gone give me some.

“AR!” Pops yelled my name while Augie sat there shaking his head, laughing.

I walked into the crib and grabbed a cold beer from the fridge. She was about to get me upset, and seeing that it took a lot to get me in that state, she had a different effect on me than others.

Allen followed me inside to check my disrespectful behavior. “What’s with you, Avery? I didn’t raise you to speak to women like that. Now, what’s going on? Do you know that young lady?”

“She’s the owner of Chanel Moné.” He gave me that look that said “oohhh”.

“I thought you liked her, son.
